This requires actively engaging the imagination during meditation with specific intent in mind. This level of concentration is effective for creative projects, clearing out beliefs that are no longer useful, great for changing areas that don’t work and augmenting those that do.
Studies have shown that meditation brings about a healthy state of relaxation such as a lower heart rate, improved respiration, decreased plasma cortisol (a major stress hormone), lower pulse rate, and increased in EEG (electroencephalogram) alpha, a brain wave associated with relaxation. Research shows that during meditation the body gains a state of intense rest. At the same time, the brain and mind become more alert, signalling a state of restful alertness. It is this state that we function best and are most creative. Through meditation we can learn to access the relaxation state at will and to be aware of the mind and the way our attitudes produce or reduce stress.
The most important thing about meditation is the shift of focus or change of mental state from the Beta (the waking conscious level) to Alpha, Theta or Delta. There are four basic states of brain activity. The Beta level is the normal state of conscious awareness.
Brain frequencies
- Beta - 14-40 cycles per second – active conscious level
- Alpha - 7-14 cycles per second - meditative level - deep thinking/analysing
- Theta - 4-7 cycles per second - biological level - body intelligence
- Delta - 0.2-4 cycles per second - deep sleep - connection with higher intelligence
